Practices are structured to accommodate everyone with some teaching and learning and some polishing and refining.
We run regular “open practices” – a chance for those who are new to morris dancing to come and start learning alongside others who are at the same stage.
Dates of upcoming open practices:
- Monday 19 January 2026
- Monday 28 September 2026
Note: The date(s) for the coming year are set in early November.
To start you will learn the steps and then learn the figures for a particular dance, then put the chorus in and put the whole dance together. At first you might only be working on 1 dance and perhaps the stepping for another. As you are ready you can add more dances to your repertoire.
We encourage you to take notes to help you learn, getting to know the names of the dances with their traditions, and the steps.
The team has an online shared dance grid which records which dances you have had 1 or 2 tries at, which you are progressing with and which you are confident to dance out (perform in public).
We always work at your pace and will talk to you about when you feel ready to get your kit (dress, bells, etc) together and dance out with us. We will usually aim for you to be ready for a specific event and when you first dance out you might only do 1 or 2 dances that you are ready for – nobody expects you to know the whole repertoire before you dance out!
If you’d like to give it a go, please contact us.
